How to track AI search visibility in 2027? In short: check three places, in this order. First, check Search Console for Google AI views. Second, check Google Analytics 4, known as GA4, for AI visits. Third, run a small prompt check each month for names and citations. No single report tells the full story, and if you check only one place, you will miss most of the picture. Together, these three checks show if AI tools find you, send visits, and describe you well.

Key Takeaways

  • AI visibility means how often AI tools show, name, or cite you.

  • Search Console shows impressions. An impression is a showing, not a click.

  • GA4 shows AI visits. AI Overview clicks sit inside Organic Search.

  • A prompt check shows mentions that analytics cannot show.

What AI search visibility means

AI search visibility is simple. When a person asks an AI tool a question, does it name your brand? Does it link to your site? Does it get your facts right?

Old search gave you a spot in a list. AI search has no simple list. A tool may name you, cite you, or leave you out.

A citation is a link or named source in an AI answer. A mention names you but gives no link. Both matter.

Each tool sees a different part of the picture. This guide uses those same three checks, in that order, so nothing important is left out.

Step 1: Search Console

Search Console is a free tool from Google. Its Generative AI report shows how often links to your pages were shown in Google AI features, mainly AI Overviews and AI Mode. AI Overviews are short AI summaries at the top of some search pages. AI Mode is a chat style search experience from Google.

  1. Open Search Console and pick your site.

  2. Open Performance, then the Generative AI report.

  3. Pick at least 28 days. Short ranges jump too much.

  4. On the Pages tab, sort by impressions for top pages.

  5. Check Countries and Devices.

  6. Export the Pages table each month and save it.

Do not add this report to the classic Performance report. AI impressions are already inside the classic Web totals. Adding them counts the same views twice.

This report shows no clicks or exact questions. It does not cover ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, or the Gemini app.

Use it as a trend signal. Rising views with flat clicks may mean the AI answer gave what people needed with no visit.

Step 2: GA4

GA4 tracks visits to your site. A visit is called a session.

Built in AI Assistant channel

Google added an AI Assistant channel to GA4 in May. It needs no setup. Open Reports, then Acquisition, then Traffic acquisition, and look for the AI Assistant row.

Treat this row as a floor, not a total. It starts only from the date it was added, and it may miss some tools. If a tool shows as Referral, the built in channel did not catch it.

Custom channel group

A custom channel group is a set of rules in GA4. It groups visits by source, and it can look back at past data.

  1. In GA4, open Admin, then Data display, then Channel groups.

  2. Create a group named Channels with AI, with a channel named AI Search.

  3. Set the rule to Source matches regex. A regex is a short pattern that matches more than one name. Use a tight pattern, such as chatgpt|perplexity|gemini|claude|copilot|deepseek|grok.

  4. Save it, then move AI Search above Referral. GA4 gives each visit to the first rule it matches.

Do not use a broad pattern that starts with "ai". It can also match mail, Gmail, and Mailchimp.

Actions, not just visits

A visit alone does not pay a bill. In GA4, a key event is a valuable action, such as a form send or booking. Compare AI visits with Organic Search on sessions and key events, not size alone.

For help with reporting, see the analytics reporting page.

Step 3: Prompt check

Analytics cannot show mentions that bring no click. A prompt check fills that gap. A prompt is the question you type into an AI tool.

Write 20 to 30 prompts in the words a customer would use. Mix category, comparison, and brand prompts. Keep the list fixed for at least three months.

  1. Use a logged out or fresh chat.

  2. Ask each prompt in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Mode, and Gemini, three times each.

  3. For each run, note if you were named, cited, which rivals were named, and if facts were right.

  4. Put results in one sheet: date, prompt, tool, named, cited, rivals, facts correct.

Then work out four rates: mention rate, citation rate, share of voice, and accuracy. Mention rate is runs that named you, divided by all runs. Citation rate is runs that linked to you, divided by all runs.

If mentions rise but citations stay flat, AI tools know your name but trust other sites to describe you. Work on reviews, listings, and clear pages.

Common mistakes

  • Adding AI impressions to classic Performance totals. They are already inside them.

  • Calling impressions visits. An impression is a showing. A visit needs a click.

  • Trusting one tool alone. GA4 misses Google AI clicks as a separate line. Search Console misses ChatGPT. A prompt check misses scale.

  • Judging one week. AI answers vary by day. Wait a full month, or a quarter for small sites.

  • Counting bots as people. Bots do not buy or book.

  • Using an old text fragment trick. It no longer works for AI Overviews.

  • Chasing one AI traffic number. Report a GA4 floor, a Search Console trend, and prompt rates.

FAQs

Does Search Console show AI Overview clicks?

No, not on their own. The Generative AI report shows impressions only. Clicks on AI Overview and AI Mode links sit inside the classic Performance report.

Can GA4 separate AI Overview clicks from normal Google clicks?

No. GA4 puts AI Overview and AI Mode clicks inside Organic Search. There is no separate label for them today.

Why do I see no ChatGPT traffic in GA4?

There may be none yet, or it may sit in another channel. Check that your site does not block the search bot ChatGPT uses. Then search GA4 by source for "chatgpt".

How often should I check AI search visibility?

Check GA4 each week, and Search Console and prompts each month. For a small site, wait a full quarter before you call a change a trend.
